When we look at lists of #1 hits from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, a range of memories comes flooding back. We can recall the words and music of most of the tunes instantly, even for those that were from before our time. By contrast, typical reactions to the list of 2000s #1s are “Huh?”, “Who?”, and “Did you just make half of those songs up?” The decade was sort of a reverse Renaissance, a period of cultural and economic decline, and much of its music has already been forgotten. Nonetheless, fourteen songs have emerged from our collective amnesia to earn a permanent exhibit in the hall of supposedly “bad” #1s.
